What Is My IP Address? Skriv ut

Your IP address could be described as the identifying number of your internet connection.

For many internet users this number stays the same for a fair while on their home or business router and every search and action on the internet can be identified as being connected to this number. This is part of the reason that Google and other companies know how to present you with advertising and other information that they think is related to your internet usage patterns and also how government and other agencies collect information about everything that occurs through that particular internet connection.

The IP address that internet providers issue to home and business users usually stays the same for a number of days or even weeks.

An IP address that doesn't change is referred to as a "Static IP address". A static IP address often incurs an extra charge through the internet provider of the connection and the owner then gets to keep the same IP address for the long term. A static IP address can be used to collect information securely from different services. i.e. a firewall on a server or a page on a website can be set to only allow connections from specific IP addresses. A static IP address can also be useful if you have a Google Analytics account. You can add the static IP address as a filter in Google Analytics so that visits to your website from your office are ignored because most website owners do not need to know how many times they and their staff visit their own website.

With mobile phone internet connections IP addresses are still recorded however the address will usually change every time you connect or disconnect from the service or when the phone switches to another mobile phone tower.

IP address that change once in a while or frequently are called "Dynamic IP addresses".

Website hosting companies can block IP addresses that appear to be hacking into their servers. For example if you try to log into your computerjazz.net email account too many times with an incorrect password eventually our system will block your IP address. This is done to prevent a person or bot from hacking into a mailbox by repeatedly trying to guess the password. We can also block an entire IP range if our servers are attacked by a range of IP addresses in some foreign country. We can also block the IP range for an entire country temporarily.
